According to a statement released by Natasha Adonis on behalf of the Heinrich Böll Foundation (HBF), Kunene, 41, was last seen on Monday afternoon (26 February 2018). Every effort by concerned family and friends to locate her has been in vain.

She reportedly mysteriously disappeared and missed crucial appointments including her work commitments. Subsequently a missing persons case was opened at the Randfontein Police on 26 February 2018.

“Her colleagues noticed something was amiss when Kunene, a diligent and reliable worker who seldom missed her commitments, failed to arrive for an appointment to ferry them to a workshop she had arranged.

She also did not deliver food to the shelter for abused women and children, a chore she has carried out without fail since 2005.”

Kunene is a Deputy Director at the West Rand based NGO, A Re Ageng Social Services. The organisation runs two shelters for abused women and children in Bekkersdal and Simunye. It also operates six victim-empowerment centres in police stations on the far West Rand, servicing victims of rape, domestic violence and other criminal offences. A Re Ageng further provides statutory services (adult diversions in both Randfontein and Westonaria Courts) as well as marriage and trauma counselling, substance abuse and ex-offenders programmes, including outreach awareness campaigns.

“A Re Ageng has been embroiled in a long-running litigious case involving money laundering, corruption and the blatant abuse of power perpetrated by Senior officials of the department,” Adonis said.
