#NewYearsEveMurder: Raw emotions at Rooskrans funeral

Four hour funeral held over the weekend for young woman brutally murdered on New Year's Eve in Toekomsrus.

Friends, family and residents gathered in Toekomsrus on Saturday (6 January) to say their last goodbyes to Danél Ruwaydah Rooskrans, 25, who was brutally murdered on News Year’s Eve.

Family first gathered at her parents’ home and then joined other mourners for the church service. Thereafter they went to the Toekomsrus Cemetery where she was finally buried. It was difficult to establish whether any of her ex-boyfriend’s family members attended the funeral, due to the large number of people who did attend.

The four-hour funeral was as sad as it was beautiful. So many friends, family members and other residents came to the service that not everybody could find a seat in the church. Some stood outside while listening to the service on the church’s public address system. Rooskrans’ two sons, aged nine months and three years respectively, were also there. The toddler was crying most of the time. The possibly that he was with Rooskrans when she was murdered has not been ruled out.

When Toulin Moses spoke about her cousin, she remained brave despite struggling to contain herself. Zubaidah Pandor told mourners about her last moments with Rooskrans. “We were sitting on the porch, when she said, ‘See you now'”. Pandor said little did she know that a while later Rooskrans would lie dead in her arms.

A slide show of her photos were showed and a group of young men dedicated a beautiful song to her.

At the grave site where a red carpet had been laid out, songs were being played. While Rooskrans’ coffin was slowly being lowered into the grave, white doves were released.
