The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) urges parents to take precautions and prioritise children’s safety during the National Taxi Strike tomorrow (Wednesday, 8 November).
According to Steve Mabona, GDE spokesperson, “It is important to note that this activity is taking place during our critical examination period. Learners should not be disadvantaged because of an activity which is beyond their control. All Chief Invigilators will assist and afford all Grade 12 learners who might arrive late an opportunity to write their final exams accordingly. The Department will invoke necessary prescripts for all those learners who might not make it to the exam. Chief Invigilators will also use their discretion to accommodate learners wanting to write at alternative centres.

“The Department has communicated to all school principals to give children in the lower Grades who might not make it to school on Wednesday another opportunity to write any assessment that might be missed.
We also appeal to parents to make the necessary alternative transport arrangements, especially for our Grade 12 learners.”
Panyaza Lesufi, GDE MEC, said, “It is concerning and unfortunate that such activities continue to be organised during this critical period of examinations in the education environment. In fact, such activities subvert the country. All our Grade 12 learners should be preoccupied by preparations and excelling in their work rather than any other activity that derails their efforts and focus.”
