Three dead, one airlifted following gruesome crash

A crash over the weekend in Middelvlei left three people dead.

Three people were killed and one person was airlifted after the vehicle they travelled in allegedly rolled. The accident took place at about 6am on Sunday, 22 October.

Louretta Valentine, an eyewitness who was on her way to Randfontein said the vehicle was coming from the direction of Carletonville on Main Road. She said, “In my rear-view mirror I saw a Mini Cooper, travelling at a tremendous speed”.

She said when the vehicle passed her she noticed that the driver did not seem to be in total control of it.

“I did not see them slacking down towards the sharp turn ahead. When I came around the bend, I saw smoke. The Mini had just landing back on its wheels. I am not sure if the vehicle first crashed into a wall and then rolled, or rolled and then crashed into the wall.

“I saw some of the occupants lying in and next to the vehicle. I called a security company, which responded immediately. An off-duty police officer was also on scene, as was another security company.”

Valentine added that one of the security companies’ members mentioned the strong stench of alcohol.

Ineke van Huyssteen confirmed to the Herald that Gauteng emergency services attended to the scene, and that the ER24 helicopter airlifted one of the victims to a hospital.

Valentine added, “Music was still playing in the vehicle after the gruesome accident”.

The Herald is awaiting an official report from the police.
