UPDATE: Girl, 14 months, nearly drowns in pool in Vleikop

Latest on the condition of the 14-month-old baby girl who almost drowned last week.

A family friend who was on the scene last Wednesday (11 October) after a 14-month-old baby girl almost drowned, gave the Herald an update on her medical condition.

Pottie Potgieter from Mapogo Security and friend of the family said that a day after the incident the girl’s heart was beating and that she was on a ventilator, breathing on her own at stages. By Saturday, 14 October, her heart rate improved from five up to 25/ 26 beats per minute. She also started moving her feet and arms, but has not opened her eyes.

When the ventilator was set lower and her eyes started opening slightly. She also responded when she heard her family speak.

This morning (16 October), Potgieter told the Herald that the baby’s eyes are fully open, she moves a lot more, but that she is still on life support as there is still water in her lungs. The family was told to try and wake her up, and they remain positive. Potgieter said her parents requested that the community pray for her.

At about 5.30pm on Wednesday, 11 October, ER24 paramedics received an emergency call about a near-drowning incident in Vleikop involving a 14-month-old baby girl, and that she needed urgent medical attention.

An official, reliable source told the Herald the little girl was below the surface for about two minutes before she was pulled from the pool. Her father performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) until he felt a weak pulse.

ER24 paramedics took over from him, stabilised her and transported her to a hospital. The source also told the Herald that there was proper fencing around the pool.
