Be careful what you post on Facebook, warn police

General safety tips for females using Facebook and other social media were provided by Captain Appel Ernst.

Watch what you post online because it can be dangerous, the police warned during a recent Women Empowerment session held by the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court.

About 80 women from the community and surrounding residential areas as well as police were in attendance. The event was organised by Magistrate Fatima Khan, under the auspices of the SA Chapter of the International Association of Women Judges (SAC-IAWJ). The main aim was to empower the women in Randfontein’s communities and to bring them up to date on the processes that need to be followed in cases of domestic violence, maintenance issues, wills and asset forfeiture. Various experts in these fields addressed the women.

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson, discussed general safety tips for women and also sensitised the attendees on cautionary measures when sharing information on Facebook and other social media.

Lastly, a basic self-defence demonstration was presented by the candidate attorneys from Bhika Calitz Attorneys.

The session only lasted approximately 45 minutes, but all the attendees were empowered with knowledge when they left the courtroom. Magistrate Khan thanked the local attorneys for their participation in the event – they sponsored cupcakes and beverages for each of the attendees.

“Randfontein Police appreciates the efforts made by Magistrate Khan and her associates in empowering the females in our communities. We are proud to form part of this partnership,” said Brigadier Jacob Manamela, Randfontein Police Station Commander.

Here are just a few tips about what NOT to share on Facebook:

• Your home address

• When you are going on holiday

• Too much information about your children; e.g. which school they attend

• Pictures of your kids or yourself in swimwear

• Complaints about your boss/ colleagues

• The layout of your house

• Your work address

• Do not “Check in” at locations so that people can see where you are

• Do not put your contact details on Facebook

Magistrate Khan would like to thank the following contributors for making the event such a success:

Zandie Matondo from Truter Crause and Wiggell Attorneys; Sunita Bhika and Flip Calitz and their candidate attorneys from Bhika Calitz Attorneys; Sanet van Breda from Swart, Redelinghuys and Nel Attorneys, Frans Mpatswa Attorneys; Mellett Attorneys and Nicky Redelinghuys Attorneys.
