Historic boxing bout in Mohlakeng dubbed “historic”

It took a Randfonteiner just three rounds to drop a Ghanaian international at an historic boxing bout in Mohlakeng.

A large crowd turned up at the Mohlakeng Ramosa Hall recently to witness the Victory Sport Productions 8 boxing tournament and international flyweight main fight event between Moruti Nthalane and Ghanaian Isaac Quaye in honour of Peter ‘Terror’ Mathebula.

Peter ‘Terror’ Mathebula made history back in 1980, when he beat Korean Tae-Shik Kim in the USA, to become the first black South African to win a world title.

The event can be seen as an historic occasion, as well as a first-time professional boxing tournament to be held in Mohlakeng. The event was also streamed live on SuperSport. Besides the big crowd, Mzi Khumalo and his wife Ntsiki, and Mpho Nawa – former WRDM mayor and also boxer, were also in attendance.

From the word go, Moruti gave the Ghanaian no space to move as he clobbered him within three rounds. This was impressive, considering the bout was scheduled for 10 rounds. Isaac visited the canvas twice, was eventually knocked out.

“To be fighting for Terror in his home town provided me with more inspiration, as he was a flyweight when he won the world title back in 1980,” Moruti said.

Another bout at the tournament was, however, a dismal outing for local boy Sandile Kukama, trained by Pule Mahloko. He could not use his home ground to his advantage and lost by a split decision in the fourth round to Mkhonzi Nkosi.
