Murdered Toekies mom: Ex-husband found guilty

UPDATE: Man found guilty of murdering ex-wife Candice Fritz in 2016.

The Johannesburg High Court found Ray Leslie guilty of murdering his 37-year-old ex-wife Candice Fritz, a mother of two young children, in Toekomsrus last year.

Leslie pleaded guilty to murdering her and subsequently was found guilty of murder. Leslie was initially charged with murder as well as rape, but was not found guilty of rape due to insufficient evidence. The judge did, however, say there was a strong possibility that the victim had been raped.

Leslie’s trial in the Johannesburg High Court is still ongoing. He will appear in court again on 15 September when arguments for mitigating and aggravating circumstances will be heard.

During the night of 13/ 14 November 2016, Fritz was found brutally murdered in her car. Randfontein Police arrested her ex-husband on the morning of 14 November and he was charged with her murder.

During the suspect’s first court appearance, Magistrate Elbie Botha confirmed that the charge against the suspect was one of murder and that Fritz had been stabbed repeatedly. During a subsequent court appearance, the suspect heard that the charge had been changed to rape and murder. It came to light that the police had searched the suspect’s house and found blood on the wall in the passage. They also found towels and clothes with blood on them, and a broken window.

A pair of men’s underpants was found in a dustbin. It was also disclosed that a Samurai sword had been found, allegedly with blood on it. It also came to light that when Fritz was found in her red Polo, her pants were pulled half-way down.
