More than 100 boys and girls between the ages of 15 and 18 battled it out in various sporting codes during this past weekend’s OR Tambo/ Soncini social cohesion games hosted by the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) at the Greenhills Sport Stadium.

The games started at ward level in Randfontein and Westonaria.

“The two towns needed to have one squad to represent the municipality at the Regional Games to be played on Saturday, 16 September.

Both the girls and boys U/17 football teams as well as girls U/19 team to represent the RWCLM at the upcoming regionals were chosen on Saturday. RWCLM still needs to finalise the squads in codes such as swimming, athletics and rugby,” said Enock Mosiea of the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation.

Netball player Lineo Mahase, told the Herald the games motivated her to live her dream, while Dineo Motaung, a soccer player, said she is very excited to be part of the games.

Giopolang Dikeledi, Luyanda Mohlanaga and Dineo Motaung – three members of the girls U/17 football team.

The games are played in all corridors of the Gauteng Region and the main ones are to be held in Ekurhuleni in October. These games are a result of the Memorandum of Understanding signed by Premier David Makhura and the Emilia Romagna Region (President Stefano Bonaccini) for economic, social and technological cooperation. This event will be part of the centenary celebrations of OR Tambo.

Teams in five codes of sports – athletics, basketball, swimming, soccer and rugby – will be selected and trained to represent Gauteng in the Tricolour Games that will be taking place in Italy in 2018.

The municipality thanks the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation and all officials for making the day a big success.
