How to defend yourself …

Watch out, R'fontein bullies and criminals! SA professional Muay Thai title-holder is teaching the vulnerable how to defend themselves.

To be able to defend yourself in a situation, you must know how to act.

Self-defence is a countermeasure that involves defending your health and well-being from harm.

Eugene van der Merwe, a local resident, has the community’s safety at heart, which is why he recently decided to give schoolchildren a self-defence class – in order for them to be able to act in all situations. The classes are not just for children, however – they include the whole family. Eugene is a South African professional Muay Thai title-holder who goes by the name Headhunter.

“This self-defence class teaches you how to defend yourself. The methods I use are a mix between Muay Thai, Judo, Krav Maga and Jiu Jitsu. With crime statistics through the roof, self-defence is essential.”

During the class, children of all ages were present. Each child was given the opportunity to learn how to defend him- or herself in different situations.

Read our 11 August edition to find out what the classes include and what positive impact self-defence classes have on the individual.
