Ethiopian arrested for illegal firearm

Foreign national arrested in Bekkersdal for possession of illegal firearm and ammunition.

An Ethiopian shop-owner was arrested earlier this week in Bekkersdal for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police’s spokesperson, said the arrest came after an intelligence-driven operation.

The operation took place at about 3.30pm in the Bekkersdal Holomisa section. Lefakane added that the police had received information about the shop-owner being in possession of the firearm.

“They proceeded to the address and recovered the firearm and ammunition. The shop-owner could not give a reasonable explanation for having the firearm, and was immediately arrested,” she confirmed.

The suspect made a brief appearance in the Westonaria Regional Court on Thursday, 29 June, and was denied bail.
