Petition against increased rates and taxes

Over 200 signatures and counting for DA's petition against proposed increases to rates and taxes.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) Ward 7 had a petition doing the rounds recently to stand against proposed increases to rates and taxes.

Randfontein and Westonaria residents face steep taxes following debt and maintenance challenges.

The increases range from 1,8 to 323 per cent for residents as well as businesses.

When the draft budget was proposed by the Rand West City Local Municipality’s Executive Mayor, Mzi Khumalo, the DA caucus made its disapproval known.

According to Alwyn van Tonder, DA caucus leader, residents will be “expected to pay for the bad decisions made by the ANC.”

The DA Rand West has subsequently launched petitions to give the residents a chance to speak for themselves.

DA Ward 7 councillor, Craig Harrison took to his ward to gather signatures to move against the proposed increases.

Harrison has managed to get over 200 signatures and counting after taking to the streets on Saturday, 20 May.
