Shebeen massacre: Westonaria community in shock after four people were killed and three women raped during the weekend.

The Gauteng Provincial Investigating Unit has launched a manhunt for six suspects after they massacred four people, injured five others, and raped three women during the weekend.

According to Constable Lucky Matome from the West Rand Cluster Corporate Communication, the incident took place at a shebeen between the Speruperu and Papalala informal settlements in Westonaria, some time between 1.30am and 4am on Saturday, 20 May.

He said the shooting started after one of the suspects dropped and broke a beer bottle.

Five patrons were injured in the shooting, three women were raped, and four individuals, including one of the rape victims, were killed. The gunshot survivors as well as the surviving rape victims were taken to a local hospital for medial attention.

“A case of murder, business robbery, rape and attempted murder is being investigated,” Matome said.

The six suspects are still on the run, although two men were taken in for questioning following the incident. The Westonaria Police are appealing to the community not to apprehend the suspects in an attempt to serve mob justice upon them, as they are armed and dangerous.
