Athletics Club to host big Joburg event

R50 000 is up for grabs at the upcoming JM Busha 54 race hosted by a local athletics club at the Rand Stadium on 28 May.

Mohlakeng — Colossus Athletics Club from Mohlakeng will have the huge task and honour of hosting the first JM Busha 54 Race (for Peace and Unity in Africa). The race is to be held at the Rand Stadium in Johannesburg, on Sunday, 28 May.

The event is part of the Africa Month of May, which is celebrated all over the continent as informed by the African Union, and aimed at uniting the continent.

“We are simply delighted that the Local Organising Committee has given us the honour of hosting an event of this magnitude. This is all thanks to Central Gauteng Athletics,” said Andrew Vusi Mathiya, Colossus chairman.

The prize money will definitely be worth running for as the 42km men and women's winners will receive R50 000 and the 21km men and women's winners will receive R6 000.

The event consists of three race distances, each open to male and female runners in various categories, as follows:

• 42km, women and men (Open, Junior (15 to 19), Veterans (40 to 49), Masters (50 to 59) and Grand Masters (60+)

• 21km, women and men (Open, Junior (15 to 19), Veterans (40 to 49), Masters (50 to 59) and Grand Masters (60+)

• 5km, men and women (Open, Junior (15 to 19), Veterans (40 to 49), Masters (50 to 59) and Grand Masters (60+)

Race times are:

• 42km – 6.30am

• 21km – 6.30am

• 5km – 7.15am
