Return to the ring a knock-out

Randfontein's favourite boxer is back with more muscles than before.

After a brief absence from boxing, Hardus Jacobs, one of the town’s youngest and most skilled boxers, has returned to the ring and it was a knock-out – literally.

On Saturday, 6 May, Hardus took part in a boxing championship in Springs and in the second round, he knocked his opponent out and walked away the winner of the fight.

Before Hardus took a break from boxing, he fought in the 47kg weight class, but after body weight training and eating right, he managed to gain the 11kg needed to fight in a heavier weight class.

Hardus decided to increase his weight as he felt he weighed nothing in comparison to his contemporaries. He also felt up to the challenge to exchange more powerful blows in the ring.

Last year Hardus achieved a silver at the South African Boxing Championships, and while it was only one step away from the gold, he lost his chance of touring Botswana and later exchanging fists with Russian boxers.

While not getting the gold was a blow for the young boxer, he plans to make last year’s silver a gold this year.

For one of his first fights in his new and heavier weight class, Hardus did excellently. He just needs to maintain his confidence in the ring against bigger opponents.
