Two schoolboys die in tragic car crash

Tragedy as two learners killed on their way to support an older brother and friend at a school rugby match.

The tragic deaths of two youngsters early this morning has shaken Randfontein and its schools to the very core.

MC Prinsloo, a learner at Laerskool Randfontein (Ram) and Damian McKeith, a former learner at the same school, died in an apparent car crash in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

According to Fanus Prinsloo, MC’s father, the two boys were in a car with his wife Zurita and their son Morné, a Grade 10 learner at Hoërskool Jan Viljoen (Jannas), on their way to watch the family’s eldest son (Franco, a 17-year-old matric learner at Hoërskool Riebeeckrand) play rugby in Naboomspruit, when they were involved in a collision, during which MC and Damian sadly lost their lives.

Fanus explained further that Franco was also en route to the same destination with his rugby team in the school’s bus and unknowingly drove by the accident scene. Fanus added that Franco did not realise it was his family in the crash and the bus did not stop – instead, it proceeded to its destination.

Zurita was said by Fanus to have sustained shoulder injuries and broken ribs. Morné’s condition is currently unknown by the Herald although it it believed that he is still in hospital.

Leon Haupt, the principal of Laerskool Randfontein, has since spoken to the Herald about MC and Damian and said they will be greatly missed by staff members and learners of the school. He mentioned that MC was one of the school’s finest cricketers. He ended off by sending the families his deepest sympathy on their losses and wishing those who were injured a speedy recovery. He also said both families will be in the school’s prayers.

Annie Nolan, the Ram spokesperson, said she was Damian’s teacher while he was a learner there. She said it seems like it was only yesterday that he was in her class and that he will be sorely missed by her.

MC’s former rugby coach at Ram, Hansen Pretorius, said he was a spontaneous individual who was always joking about, but was always helpful when those around him were in need.

He said MC’s two older brothers, Morné and Franco, were both excellent rugby players as well and MC always looked up to them and wanted to play rugby like them. Hansen added that this year, MC played in the school’s second rugby team.

“We will always miss MC in our team. Good luck to his family,” Hansen said.
