Golfing day to honour late ‘Oom’ Ben Diale

Soccer legends, guests and businessmen gathered at Randfontein Golf Club to honour the late 'Oom' Ben Diale.

Dr Manyane Diale, a well-known businessman, was one of many golfers and guests to take part in the inaugural Ben Diale Memorial Golf Day and dinner function held at the Randfontein Golf Club recently.

The inaugural golf tournament was held in remembrance of Dr Diale’s late father, popularly known in Mohlakeng as ‘Oom’ Ben Diale.

The inaugural golf tournament was held in remembrance of Dr Diale’s late father, popularly known in Mohlakeng as ‘Oom’ Ben Diale. He was the brains behind the Diale Funeral Parlour back in 1961. It’s said he was the first black man to open up such an operation. He played a role as community leader and member of the then Mohlakeng Native Advisory Board, which he later resigned from, and went on to join the African National Congress (ANC).

He was an active ballroom dancer, actor and conductor at St Paul’s Anglican Church, and his stage craft and repertoire thrilled both adjudicators and audience.

Golf was also one of his passions, which is why his son, Dr Manyane, saw it fit to honour him through the golf tourney and function.

Other prominent figures and personalities involved on the day included Molefi Oliphant (ex-president of the South African Football Association), Donald ‘Ace’ Khuse and Joseph ‘Banks’ Setlhodi (two former Kaizer Chiefs legends) and Mpho Nawa (former West Rand District Municipality Executive Mayor).

Although the golf day was scheduled for the full 18 holes, golfers only managed nine holes, because of unexpected rain. However, the results were good, with legend ‘Ace’ Khuse managing a podium finish. The winner, with a handicap of 11 and 17 points, was William Mosipho. The other spot on the podium went to Bossy Mofokeng from the Vaal.

Mzi Khumalo, Executive Mayor of the Rand West City Local Municipality was among the other participants, while Dr Chomane Chomane, the Lesedi FM morning show host, was the master of ceremonies.
