Off-road action in Holfontein

Off-road bikers showed their skills in a 100km event held on a farm in between the mealie fields.

Off-road bikers pulled out all the stops in the popular Holfontein 100km Enduro event held on a farm in Holfontein, in the Randfontein district, during the weekend.

The event took place in perfect weather on Saturday, 11 March, after the little bit of rain on Thursday had settled the dust, which is normally a challenge on an Enduro event. The field consisted of a variety of riders of different skill levels and age groups.

Riders had to complete five laps of 20 km each to earn their Holfontein 100km medals. The track catered for riders with all skill levels, with bypass ‘chicken runs’ around the hard-core technical obstacles.

There were a variety of riding sections per loop, including a 2,8km Enduro-X technical track, open mealie field riding and the long ‘Vasbyt’ veld section. There was a shorter section for youngsters under the age of 13 years.

The youngest rider that has ever taken part in this event was four years old and the oldest was in his sixties.

The event took place in a controlled, closed, track environment with a great vantage point for spectators on the Enduro-X section. There was also a kiddies’ play area and a festive pit lane area which the riders had to pass through on each lap, allowing spectators to cheer on their favourites.

A new feature that was added to the event was the Speed Freak trophy. A random speed trap was set up on the course, with radar guns to determine who really achieved the top speed of the day.

Harry Grobler walked away with the honours, achieving a top speed of 147 kilometre per hour on an uphill section with his Yamaha motorbike.

The category winners and their times were as follows:

• Open Class: Phillip van Niekerk, 02:03:16

• Novice Class: Ernst da Silva, 01:59:14

• Masters Class: Harry Grobler, 01:57:11

• Junior Class: Graham Greeff, 02:16:21

• Ladies Class: Carle Fouche, 02:43:04

• Youngsters: Jacques Naude, 01:06:25

The next event will be held on 6 May and will cater for quadbikes and motorbikes, in two separate events.
