Miss South Africa finalists graced the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) with their presence on Monday, 13 February for a good cause.

Shané Naidoo, a finalist from Benoni feeding dogs at the centre a special treat from her treat bowl.

With a view to Valentine’s Day the finalists visited the Soweto Animal Rescue and Advisory Centre (Sarac). The centre takes in animals that have experienced cruelty. They give these animals a home, feed them and train them, however, the organisation’s primary aim is to reframe people’s attitudes.

The 12 Miss SA finalists together with Sun International in collaboration with Cell C took it upon themselves to help Sarac fulfil their mandate to rehabilitate animals in need.

They visited the centre on Monday to spread Valentine’s Day love by donating supplies to the animal shelter.

Jerry Selwane, former SPCA inspector who now runs Sarac said, “At the moment we have 30 puppies and 60 adult dogs that have been rescued”.

The finalists subsequently gave the centre dog food, cleaning equipment, toys, leashes and collars.

Boipelo Mabe, a finalist from Alexandra, Gauteng having a ball feeding animals at the centre.

“We are delighted to be able to help. Cruelty to animals is abhorrent to all right-thinking individuals. To help someone like Jerry Selwane – who has devoted his life to rescuing animals in need – is a privilege,” Suzette van der Merwe, Cell C Foundation Managing Executive said.

Kayla Malherbe, a finalist from Mtunzini, KwaZulu-Natal with Suzette van der Merwe, Cell C Foundation Managing Executive and Jerry Selwane, former SPCA inspector who now runs Sarac.

After the 12 finalists had handed over the goodies to Sarac, they spent time with some of the rehabilitated animals in the centre and gave each dog a special treat from their treat bowls.

Some of the women were so taken up with the animals, they wanted to adopt some themselves.

Nicole van Niekerk, a finalist from Môregloed, Pretoria holding one of the puppies at the centre.

Selwane said he is grateful for the supplies the Miss SA finalists brought them and will use it to save more animals from cruelty.
