Respect thy scholar patrol

Traffic police and community safety take scholar patrols under their wing.

The Randfontein Traffic Police as well as Community Safety have taken the town’s scholar patrols under their wing.

On Monday, 6 February, members of both departments visited four primary schools and handed out official scholar patrol uniforms for learners, gave the various schools talks on road safety and trained them to be mini traffic officers.

Neo Oepeng said no school should feel left out as more schools will be visited for scholar patrol training and uniform handouts.

The schools visited were Matlapaneng, Malerato, Tswelelo and Phandulwazi Primary Schools, where a total of 52 uniforms were handed out.

Not only were learners given attention, the traffic police spoke to motorists as well about traffic rules and road safety.

In addition, to avoid unnecessary traffic jams outside schools in the mornings and afternoons and to maintain a safe environment around schools, traffic police laid down the law for motorists regarding where to pick up and drop off their children at schools.

Neo Oepeng from the Randfontein Traffic Police said, “We are requesting motorists to comply and give scholar patrols the respect they need.”

To the schools who have not received uniforms, training and road safety talks, Oepeng said, “To those who didn’t receive anything, we haven’t forgotten you. We are on our way.”

She said the traffic police are planning many more visits to other schools in town, and wants nobody to feel left out.
