Shoplifting a serious crime, police warn

"Shoplifting is a more serious crime than you'd think," said the Randfontein Police.

The Randfontein Police are concerned about the rise in incidents of shoplifting since the festive season.

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police’s spokesperson said, “Some people are under the impression that shoplifting is a minor offence but this is not the case. The price of an item also does not influence the seriousness of the case.”

“Children are not excluded from being arrested for theft, therefore it is advisable to make sure what your child takes while in a store,” she explained further.

She said the young people in Randfontein are also allegedly daring one another to commit shoplifting.

“As indicated, the suspect will be arrested and no excuses will be entertained by the police. The case will be heard in court. Theft remains theft. It is a criminal offence and is punishable, with sentences ranging from fines to imprisonment,” Ernst added.
