Domestic violence: Help for victims

Victim of domestic violence? What you should know and must do when it happens.

Domestic violence is a major social problem in South Africa and it happens every day, right here in Randfontein – from Greenhills to Toekomsrus, Mohlakeng to Westonaria, and all the other areas.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) recently released information so that all residents are informed of the types of domestic violence. According to them, many residents are of the opinion that there are only two forms, namely, physical and emotional abuse. Domestic abuse can happen to both men and women, and of course, to children.

The Randfontein Police have their hands full with cases that are reported daily. Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police’s spokesperson said, “We have so many incidents where the victim opens up a case against the other person but the next day, tries to withdraw it. The police are not allowed to withdraw a case that has been opened, only the Magistrates’ Court can.”

Unfortunately, in many of the cases, the abuse will then continue.

Here are the types of abuse that fall into the category of domestic violence:

• Physical abuse – when you are assaulted or threatened with violence

• Sexual abuse – when you are raped, or forced to perform or watch humiliating sexual acts

• Emotional, verbal and psychological abuse – when you are subjected to constant insults, ridicule or name calling

• Economic abuse – when you are prevented from earning an income

• Intimidation – if you receive threatening and frightening messages

• Harassment – when you repeatedly receive phone calls or are constantly watched, and this makes you fearful

• Stalking – when your abuser repeatedly follow you or demands to talk to you against your will

• Damage to property – when your abuser intentionally damages your property

• Any other controlling or abusive behaviour

If any of the above happens to you, you should immediately take action. Never hide your bruises or make excuses, for instance that you fell, etc. Do not protect your abuser. The abuse will just continue.

What to do when you are a victim of domestic violence?

Go to the police station and open up a case. Then, go to the clerk of the court at the Magistrate and obtain a protection order. A protection order will prevent your abuser from repeating the attack against you.
