Robbers at large after heist at Pep

Village Square installs extra CCTV cameras as part of their new high-calibre system to boost the monitoring of the centre after the heist at Pep.

A group of robbers are still at large after targeting a Pep Cell store in Village Square Shopping Centre early in January.

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson said the incident took place at about 9.30am on Monday, 9 January.

“It is alleged by a 24-year-old complainant that they were busy with their normal tasks when three intruders forced them into a back room. The suspects allegedly instructed the complainant to open safes in the back of the shop from which they removed a substantial amount of money and a number of cellular devices,” Ernst said.

The suspects then allegedly placed all their loot into a bag and left the shop. The victims were not injured.

Francois du Buisson, Manager of Village Square Shopping Centre told the Herald on Wednesday, 18 January that they are aware that three people had robbed Pep Cell.

“Reports indicate that money and cellphones were stolen.

We are doing everything in our power to prevent incidents of crime in the centre and have installed extra CCTV cameras as part of our new high-calibre system to boost the monitoring of the mall even further,” said Du Buisson.

He continued by saying that incidents like these are a reminder that crime is a larger issue in our communities and our country, and that people need to work together to overcome it.

Du Buisson added that they are working with the police to ensure the safety of their shoppers and tenants, which is their top priority. They are also investigating additional measures to help combat crime which, for obvious reasons, they wish to keep confidential.
