Enough is enough, said Jetta Beaufort, DA Ward 8 councillor about dumping and poor service delivery in Toekomsrus.
On Monday, 16 January, Beaufort took to the streets of Toekomsrus to identify issues affecting the community. Beaufort highlighted one pressing issue affecting the community’s health and aesthetics – illegal dumping.
She said one of the worst dumpsites in the area is opposite Randfontein Secondary School where the remains of a foetus was found early in 2015.
The Herald went to meet Beaufort at the illegal dumpsite and saw that some of the rubbish at the dumpsite, including discarded tyres, had been set alight seemingly to get rid of it. Beaufort said the rubbish opposite the school had been piling up throughout the entire festive season.
“We had to spend the festive season looking at this. It’s unacceptable,” she said.
Beaufort explained how she had approached the relevant parties to address the issue, but to no avail. “I am visiting problem areas in the community and will submit issues to the council,” she said.
Although the area has not been cleaned for some time, Beaufort believes the onus remains on the community.
“The community must learn. You need to put out your bins on a Friday. That’s why you got the wheelie bins – to prevent illegal dumping. Residents of Toekomsrus must learn not to dump their rubbish,” she said.
Beaufort said she hoped the issue would be addressed after it has been brought to council’s attention – not just by clearing the various illegal dumpsites in Toekomsrus, but by maintaining the areas to prevent future illegal dumping.
