Municipality visits schools upon opening

Selected R'fontein schools have since been adopted by the municipality.

It was announced that the West Rand is the best district in Gauteng, with a pass rate of 91,2 per cent.

When RWCLM schools reopened, Barbara Creecy, Gauteng MEC for Finance as well as RWCLM mayor, Mzi Khumalo and West Rand mayor, Boyce Maneli visited various schools in the area.

The visit serves to encourage learners and educators to do more, but also to discuss challenges the schools face.

Among the schools visited were Hoërskool Jan Viljoen (Jannas) and AB Phokompe Secondary School.

At AB Phokompe, the issues cited by the principal and the School Governing Body (SGB) included infrastructure, security and desk shortages.

On academic progress, Luck Chiya, RWCLM spokesperson said, “The learners are not doing well in maths and science – they perform at less than 40 per cent.”

The school, along with Badirile and Phandulwazi High Schools, has since been adopted by Creecy and Khumalo in order to forge partnerships and assist wherever possible.
