472 arrested over festive period

More than 470 people were arrested over the festive period for numerous serious offences such as rape, robbery, kidnapping, housebreaking and driving under the influence.

Law-enforcement officers in the West Rand Cluster secured 472 arrests during the week of 25 December, according to Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson.

Various suspects were arrested for numerous serious offences such as rape, robbery, kidnapping, housebreaking and theft.

Liquor-related offences were also rife as more than 100 persons were arrested for contravening the Liquor Act. Numerous vehicle drivers were arrested for driving offences.

“Police-initiated arrests were also made during our festive-season operations. These included liquor-related offences, driving offences and foreign nationals without the required documents.”

The West Rand Cluster Commander, Major General Anna Mateisi expressed her satisfaction with the number of arrests.

“We are taking a ‘no nonsense’ approach and we have also deployed the maximum number of police officers throughout the West Rand Cluster. We trust that the festive period was a safe and secure time for the residents of the West Rand Cluster,” said Mateisi.
