Cellphone tower noise hell for neighbours

A local cellphone tower has been connected to a generator and is driving residents up the wall.

A Helikon Park resident who suffers from depression and insomnia has spoken out about a noise detrimental to her mental state and sleep patterns.

Poppie Vermeulen, a six-year resident of Helikon Park came to the Herald office on Tuesday, 3 January, suffering from a buzzing noise in her head caused by a generator powering a cellphone tower.

Vermeulen described the generator as noisy, especially in the evening when the neighbourhood is quiet – so quiet, the only thing one hears is the buzzing noise of the generator.

She said the tower is new and initially did not bother her or any of her neighbours. According to Vermeulen, the noise started at about the beginning of December after lightening had allegedly hit the tower and it had to be connected to a generator.

She said the noise doesn’t help her insomnia. Even with her prescribed sleeping medication, Vermeulen said she is unable to sleep, which affects her mood.

The Herald has since attempted to contact the emergency number displayed on the tower itself but encountered a dead phone line.

Subsequently, the ward councillor of the area, Craig Harrison, was contacted regarding the matter.

Harrison took up the matter and said he is in the process of finding out when the tower will be switched back to running on electricity.

Poppie Vermeulen said the noise of the generator is detrimental to her mental wellbeing and is a nuisance to other neighbours.
