Blocked storm drain causes floods

'When it rains we basically get the entire neighborhood's storm water. The water follows it's natural path and subsequently flows through two cottages in our yard,'

A concerned resident recently approached the Herald as a last resort to have his problem solved.

Flem Flemming, a Greenhills resident has experienced numerous floodings on his premises over the past year due to a blocked storm-water drain.

“When it rains we get the entire neighbourhood’s storm water flowing onto our premises. The water follows its natural path and subsequently flows through two cottages in our yard,” Flemming said.

He said he has been reporting the problem continuously over the past year.

“Municipal workers came out once to repair the drain, but it doesn’t seem to have been done properly. I continued to report the problem but I didn’t receive any further feedback,” he said.

At Flemming’s residence the Herald noticed various attempts they have made to prevent the cottages from being flooded. Numerous trenches have been dug in the yard to direct the water away from the cottages to the marsh across the road.

“We can’t even go on holiday because someone has to be here to fix the damage after a storm. To make it even worse, we had to let our domestic worker go as we had to replace her furniture every time a storm wrecked it,” he said.

According to Peter Dick, Ward 9 councillor, this problem was reported to the municipality.
