Elderly couple critical after Saturday night crash

Couple in their 60s in critical condition after two-vehicle crash.

An elderly couple is in a critical condition in hospital after a two-vehicle crash involving a bakkie and taxi at about 6.40pm on Saturday (3 December) in Helikonpark.

The couple is believed to be in their 60s.

As the Herald arrived, emergency services used the Jaws-of-Life to rescue the male occupant from his bakkie. The female occupant of the bakkie was already transported by ER24 to Leratong Hospital.

It’s said the injured occupants of the taxi were laying all over the road. According to a reliable source, there was between 10 to 12 occupants in the taxi.

A friend of the injured elderly couple explained to the Herald on scene they were following him to Hillside for a visit.

Although the exact cause of the accident remains a police investigation, the family friend said, “The taxi was speeding down Homestead Avenue and we were coming from Lazaar Avenue. At the robot, we were turning right into Horingbek Street when the robot turned red and the taxi rode over the red robot and collided with my friends, who were busy turning into Horingbek Street.”

The Herald attempted to approach witnesses standing near the taxi but they did not wish to comment.

On scene to assist the injured were ER24, Netcare 911, the Sector 4 Community Policing Forum (CPF), the Randfontein Traffic Police as well as various residents and tow trucking companies.
