Paramedic shooter put behind bars

Velile Koyana convicted and sentenced to five years imprisonment for shooting a 57-year-old paramedic.

A 38-year-old accused paramedic shooter has been convicted and sentenced for his crime.

Velile Koyana was convicted and sentenced to five years imprisonment on 22 November for shooting the 57-year-old paramedic.

The incident took place on 5 March, 2015 at the Bekkerdal West Clinic, Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson said.

Koyana allegedly robbed a security guard at the clinic’s gate and later proceeded inside where she shot the victim. He then fled on foot.

“The motive for the attack was robbery as he demanded cash and cellphones from the victims,” Lefakane said.

After later receiving information regarding the suspect, Sergeant Hendrick Moila arrested him and found the suspect still in possession of the stolen cellphones and firearm he used during the robbery.

Koyana was charged with being in possession of an unlicensed firearm as well as stolen goods and attempted murder.

He remained in Police custody since his arrest and was finally sentenced to five years imprisonment in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court.

Warrant Officer Bernard Makgato investigated the matter and welcomed the sentence.
