Dead woman in car identified

The woman's ex-husband is the prime suspect in her murder case and will be in court tomorrow.

The suspected murderer and ex-husband of Candice Leslie (neé Fritz), 37, who was recently found dead in her car, will be appearing in the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court for the second time on 29 November, for a bail hearing.

During the ex-husband‘s first appearance in court on Wednesday, 16 November, the Herald witnessed a protest outside the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court, when a group of family members and friends demanded justice for the victim. They protested against the chance of her ex-husband applying for bail and it being granted.

Captain Appel Ernst, the Randfontein Police spokesperson, later released a statement stating the victim was driving her red VW Polo and was supposed to pick someone up in Toekomsrus at the time of her murder.

She added that the victim had allegedly not returned home by 8pm, which is when the family started searching for her. The vehicle’s tracking system was activated and on Monday, 14 November 2016 at 6am the vehicle was recovered. Ernst also said that the car was found abandoned on the corner of Cherry and Storm River Streets, Toekomsrus.

Ernst further said, “The tracking company employee then made a gruesome discovery in the abandoned vehicle. The body of the driver was found on the back seat of the vehicle. She had been brutally murdered.

Primary investigations indicated that she succumbed to multiple stab wounds.”

The Herald attended the court proceedings, which were presided over by magistrate Elbie Botha. The support for the victim was immense. Botha confirmed that the charge against the suspect was one of murder and that the victim had been stabbed repeatedly before succumbing to her injuries.

Enrico Bhana from the Women Against Women and Child abuse (WAWA) support group said, “We will be standing behind the Fritz/ Leslie family as court proceedings continue tomorrow. We demand justice for this victim, who was brutally murdered. We say “No” to violence in all forms and we ask the law to take its course, especially during this time of 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Woman and Children.”
