Boy, 8, with heart issue exposed to sewage

A Homelake family are knee-deep in sewage nearly every week.

The health of an eight-year-old boy who has had two heart surgeries is being put at risk by a municipal issue.

The De Jager family, who lives on Angelier Street in Homelake has been spending nearly every week, approximately twice a week surrounded by sewage. More often than not, sewage flows through their property, creating a health risk for their children as well as those living in their yard.

Most of the family's sewage woes come from a manhole on their property.

Most of the sewage spills from a manhole on the premises, but it also comes from sewerage pipes and drains on the premises. It even surfaces from under the paving next to a drain, which he reported to a municipal building inspector, but without any results.

Carel de Jager said his most recent sewage woes started on Tuesday, 22 November and continued the next day. He explained that he reported the matter to the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) on both days, but to no avail.

De Jager said the municipality usually comes out to unblock the drain in the street, which is a temporary solution. He feels the issue should be sorted out once and for all.

He fears for his family’s health, especially his son’s, Christo who has undergone two heart surgeries and cannot afford to get sick.

The Herald has since contacted Lucky Chiya, RWCLM spokesperson as well as Craig Harrison, the area’s ward councillor regarding the matter. Both said they reported the issue to the relevant departments. Hopefully the matter will be resolved soon.
