World AIDS Day receives massive build-up

'This campaign provides recovering addicts with crucial information regarding the prevention and treatment of HIV'

On Tuesday, 22 November the third build-up event for World AIDS Day was held at the Life Recovery Centre in Randfontein.

This event was hosted by the Department of Health and the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM). Each recovering addict who attended the event had the opportunity to gather useful information regarding HIV and AIDS.

Every year, World AIDS Day is held on 1 December, giving people worldwide an opportunity to unite in the fight against HIV. As part of the build-up towards this day, various events are held across the country.

The fourth and final build-up event will be held at the Faith Mission Church in the Zenzele informal settlement on Thursday, 24 November, a few days before the actual World AIDS Day.

“This campaign provides recovering addicts with crucial information regarding the prevention and treatment of HIV,” said Funi Radebe, the Department of Health HIV prevention coordinator.

Various stakeholders, including the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa), the Randfontein Police, the Department of Health, Life Recovery Centre, the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM), Families South Africa (FAMSA) and the Aurum Health Institute participate in this campaign.

“There are all these stakeholders, but no-one necessarily knows about them, and what they do for the community. Today, we are coming together to create awareness of all these silent killers, such as AIDS and TB. We want to get the message across to the community that there is a way out – there is help,” added Johan Lombaard, the Manager of the Life Recovery Centre.
