Poppie at rest, but SA is outraged

Family spokesperson speaks to the Herald about some allegations.

The latest of many allegations doing the rounds after the murder of three-year-old Poppie van der Merwe is that her younger brother was kidnapped directly after Poppie’s funeral on Friday, 4 November.

Poppie died after her stepfather, Kobus Koekemoer, 43, allegedly kicked her to death.

Koekemoer is currently in custody and is allegedly struggling to obtain legal representation. He will appear in the Brits Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 17 November, a family spokesperson close to Poppie’s father confirmed.

After attending Poppie’s funeral last Friday (4 November) the Herald was informed that Poppie’s little brother had been kidnapped but the family’s spokesperson denied the allegation. The boy is safe in the custody of the family spokesperson – as granted by the law.

“After the funeral, I decided to take the brother straight home and not to attend the reception at the church.”

Other media sources alleged that Poppie’s mother, Louisa Koekemoer, had been abducted and beaten by a ‘blonde policewoman’. This ‘policewoman’ allegedly yelled that “Sy gaan haar doodmaak soos hulle Poppie doodgemaak het.” When the Herald saw Louisa at the funeral, she had two black eyes, and the spokesperson confirmed that the incident had in fact occurred.
