Man, 37, imprisoned for using fraudulent ID

37-year-old R'fontein man sentenced to 3 years' imprisonment for using a fraudulent ID.

A 37-year-old man was arrested and has been convicted of fraud after using a fraudulent identity document (ID) to apply for a cellphone contract.

The crime was committed in September last year and the case against him was recently concluded in the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court, said Captain Appel Ernst, the Randfontein Police spokesperson.

In September last year, Tebogo Themba, the convicted suspect, applied for a cellphone contract using the ID of a man from Mpumalanga.

The owner of the ID became suspicious since he was in Mpumalanga at the time, and had not applied for such a contract. Subsequently, he opened a case and Themba was arrested.

Sergeant Mkhatshwa, the investigating officer, did the initial investigation and placed the case on the court roll. Later, Warrant Officer Karlien Coombe ensured that the case was court-ready. The accused has now been sentenced to three years’ imprisonment.

The Randfontein Police Management congratulated Mkhatshwa and Coombe on the successful conclusion of the case.

“The prosecuting authority is also applauded for their stance in the matter,” Ernst said.

This successful conviction is once again proof that Randfontein is no place for the criminal element. Criminals will have to account for their actions in this town.

“Congratulations to all who secured this sentence,” said Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela, the Randfontein station commander.
