Judokas claim 16 medals

Randfontein has been put on the judo map by Golden Score, the town’s local club, after raking in the medals at the South African Schools Competition held from 7 to 9 October at the Turffontein Sports Hall.

Michelle van Wezel from the club said there were 340 novice and 267 advanced entries in total. For team Randfontein, 12 novices and 11 advanced judokas entered. Nine of the novices and seven of the advanced judokas took home medals.

Seventy per cent of the club’s 23 entrants walked away with medals.

• Hannes van Wyk: age 10, U/27kg (Laerskool Rapportryer)

• Christiaan Venter: age 11, U/42kg (Laerskool Millenium)
