Students get cooking at Westcol

These students had to think on their feet after being equipped with a mystery basket of ingredients.

The regional Internal Westcol Cooking Competition, which forms part of the preparation for the World Skills Competition, was held at the Randfontein campus of the Westcol College on Saturday, 10 September. The winners will now compete on provincial level, followed by national and international levels.

“Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges such as ours are often undermined during these competitions.

However, we know we are equipped with the skills to compete on the international level, which is why we really want to send some of our students to Dubai next year for the World Skills Competition, ” said Beth le Roux, the programme manager. For the past three years, Westcol College has been undefeated in the Top Chef Competition for all TVET Colleges and Universities of Technology.

During Saturday’s competition, the students were equipped with a mystery basket of ingredients, and had to compose a three-course meal using only those ingredients. They also had to create appropriate menus, set the tables and select relevant wines to accompany the meals. The pressure was on and the students took the heat, performing well.

The three external judges were Chef Christopher Seane (kitchen judge), Chef Pieter Winterbach-O’Neil (taste judge) and Chef David Mlangeni (taste judge). The two restaurant services judges were Vuyo Matshuisa and Motshidiso Phetoe, both Hospitality Services Lecturers from the Carletonville Campus.
