The newly elected mayors of the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) and the West Rand District Municipality (WRDM) recently elected their Members of the Mayoral Committees (MMCs) to get the ball rolling for their new term.
Mzi Khumalo of the RWCLM as well as Boyce Maneli of the WRDM chose their MMCs on 31 August during council meetings.
In the WRDM council meeting, debate was sparked about Maneli’s five-year plan. Democratic Alliance (DA) caucus leader Dennis Pretorius as well as councillors from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) complained that the five-year plan was given too late, was not discussed in council and could therefore not be approved in council. Pretorius made a recommendation to discuss the plan at the next council meeting.

Later an EFF councillor stated outright that the party rejected the plan because it was not brought to their attention within a reasonable time, and that it was not beneficial to the youth or the poorest of poor.
In addition to the opposition the African National Congress (ANC) got from the DA and EFF, the Freedom Front Plus (FFP) added their two cents to the debate to state their unhappiness about the plan.
After speaker Nonkoliso Tundzi had reprimanded the EFF various times, an ANC councillor called a point of order to show the EFF up, saying the party did not have a monopoly on anarchy and at some point they would be met with anarchy by the ANC. This threw council into chaos until Tundzi ordered that the comment be retracted.
The recommendations, rejections and complaints were noted but the plan was adopted nevertheless. However, the opposition will be allowed to give input at the next council meeting.
