District municipal council elections postponed

'It is in the best interest of the people.'

The West Rand District Municipality council elections have been postponed until further notice.

The meeting was postponed on Friday, 19 August, because of objections raised by some political parties about seat allocations made by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

David Mokoena, municipal manager, decided to adjourn the meeting pending clarification of the matter by the IEC.

“It is in the best interest of the people of the region that their leadership is elected through a credible process,”

said Kamohelo Tsotetsi, West Rand District Communications Officer.

The municipality desires to have district council elections that are as free and fair as the recent local government elections. This means that the IEC must expeditiously bring the parties up to speed with the process so that the election of a speaker, executive mayor and council whip can proceed as soon as possible.

The municipality will announce the new election date soon.
