Young murder suspect arrested after being in hiding

The suspect is due to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates' Court soon.

A young Bekkersdal man has been arrested on a charge of murder after going into hiding in Cape Town.

The murder occurred on 24 July at approximately 11pm in the Tambo section of Bekkersdal, according to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson.

She said the 21-year-old suspect allegedly waited for his 20-year-old victim at the entrance of a Bekkersdal tavern. The suspect allegedly confronted the victim, stabbed him once in the chest and fled the scene. The victim died on scene.

The reason for the stabbing is believed to have been a disagreement over a girlfriend.

Police later received information that the suspect had been spotted in Cape Town.

Detective Constables Tembinkosi Mapoloba, Moeketsi Modise and Tshepo Mashala followed up on the information and discovered the suspect in hiding in a village called Mbekweni in Paarl, Cape Town.

The suspect was arrested and is soon to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court.
