Police step in: Drug dealers vs residents

Residents and police go at each other after drug campaign.

The Randfontein Police called an urgent community meeting on Thursday, 14 July in Toekomsrus, several days after part of a woman’s property had allegedly been burned down by drug dealers.

The fire occurred on 10 July, on the property of a Toekomsrus resident, Jacelyn Kok, shortly after she had taken to the streets of Toekomsrus with a number of other community members to issue ‘final notices’ to alleged known drug dealers in the area.

“It seems that some residents had taken matters into their own hands in an act of vigilantism, and started damaging the property of the alleged drug dealers.

Kok then alleged that these dealers had reciprocated by burning down her outside room,” said Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson.

Zaheer Gangat, the Randfontein Community Policing Forum (CPF) Executive Committee Chairperson, chaired the meeting on 14 July, urging residents to refrain from committing criminal offences.

“The CPF must form a partnership with the Police and not work against them,” he said.

Pastor André Roberts, the chairperson of the Toekomsrus CPF, indicated at the meeting that the intentions with the issuing of the final notices had been good, but some residents seem to have used the opportunity to promote their own agenda.

The group who handed out the final notices stated that they are compiling a memorandum which will be handed over to the Randfontein station commander, Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela in due course.

Manamela spoke at the meeting as well and said, “Lawlessness will not be tolerated.”
