Intruders ransack family home while owners sleep

'Then he sat down in the living room and saw the empty space where the TV used to be'

An unknown number of burglars allegedly entered a home in Fairway Crescent, Robin Park in the early hours of Thursday, 4 August and left with numerous valuable items while the owners were asleep.

Mathilda Jacobs, one of the owners of the house said that when they arrived home from a voting station on Wednesday night, the power at the house was out.

It is believed robbers gained entry into the Jacobs house through this window. They allegedly used a crowbar and bolt cutter to remove the iron burglar bars.
It is believed robbers gained entry into the Jacobs house through this window. They allegedly used a crowbar and bolt cutter to remove the iron burglar bars.

“We decided to call it an early night and got into bed at about 6pm,” Mathilda said. She added they had only moved into the house the previous Saturday – five days before the incident happened. They had also just contacted security companies for quotes.

“The house does have a security gate between the living area and bedrooms to keep robbers at bay,” Mathilda said.

Mathilda believes the robbers used bolt cutters and a crowbar to gain access through the windows of their house, in the early morning, stealing their TV, kettle, a drill, a computer and many other valuable items before disappearing silently.

“My brother woke up this morning and couldn’t find our kettle. He said he thought it might be in another room. Then he sat down in the living room and saw the empty space where the TV used to be. When he realised we’d been robbed, he alerted us with a terrible yell: “Get up, you’ve been robbed.”

Mathilda says they immediately called the Randfontein Police who arrived shortly after the incident.

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson confirmed that a case of housebreaking is being investigated and that numerous items were stolen.
