Baboon scares dog out of its mind

‘We suspect that Daisy was so startled by the baboon that she would have done anything to escape and survive.’

A man’s beloved dog has disappeared after Randfontein’s mischievous baboon paid two surprise visits to his home.

Fanie Bezuidenhout, a neighbour of Johan Fouchee, who owns the missing female Jack Russel-Boston Terrier cross named Daisy, claims he first spotted the baboon on Friday, 8 July when tending to the dogs while Johan was on holiday.

Fanie says the dogs were barking vigorously and when he went to investigate, he saw the baboon. “He was sitting at the food dispenser eating dog pellets while the dogs were running around scared out of their minds,” Fanie said. “Then the baboon jumped up, leapt over our fence, ran over my Wendy house and disappeared.”

According to Fanie, one of Johan’s dogs escaped through the motorised gate into the street. He says another neighbour picked her up and brought her home.

A few days later, Fanie heard the dogs barking again and when he investigated, saw the baboon for the second time. When Johan and his wife Bettie arrived home, they were devastated to find that the smallest of their dogs was missing.

“We suspect that Daisy was so startled by the baboon that she would have done anything to escape and survive,” Johan said. “I think she tried to get away from the baboon and jumped through the gate again. Or maybe the baboon took her, I don’t know.”

Johan Fouchee agrees with Fanie Bezuidenhout and says the baboon was sitting at the food dispenser eating dog pellets while the dogs were running around scared out of their minds.

Johan said their dogs are like their children. He says he never had a house dog before, but Daisy was so small and lovable they couldn’t help letting her into the house. Daisy is said to have slept in Johan and Bettie’s bed and would even watch TV with them.

“We really miss her and would love to have her back,” Johan said.

Daisy is black, with white feet, and a white tip on her tail. Anyone spotting Daisy should please contact Johan on 082 856 4466.
