Young murder suspect arrested

'The suspect allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot the victim'

A young man of 23 has been arrested after allegedly shooting another man in his knees and arm.

According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, spokesperson for the Bekkersdal Police, the incident took place on 27 June at approximately 1am at Maggie’s Tavern in Bekkersdal.

Lefakane said the victim alleged he was sitting in the tavern, where the suspect wanted to pick a fight with him for no apparent reason. She went on to say the victim tried to avoid the suspect, and was surprised to find the suspect following him when he left the tavern.

“The suspect allegedly pulled out a firearm and started shooting at the victim. Several shots were fired, injuring the victim in both knees and one arm,” Lefakane explained.

The victim was later taken to hospital, and the suspect went on the run.

An intensive investigation by detective Warrant Officer Bernard Makgato tracked the suspect down, and he was arrested on Tuesday, 19 July.

He has been charged with attempted murder and is expected to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court soon.
