UPDATE: Woman critical after being hit by biker

Brother: She needs surgery, but the doctors say she is not stable enough.

A female pedestrian is in a critical condition in the ICU at Sir Albert’s Hospital after being hit by a motorcyclist on Lazaar Avenue in Randgate last week.

According to Ian Knoetze, the woman’s brother, “She sustained serious injuries which need surgery, but the doctors say she is not stable enough.”

The woman was allegedly crossing the intersection of Lazaar Avenue and Tudhope Street when she was run down by a motorcyclist.

ER24 provided her with advanced life support interventions and transported her to Sir Albert’s Hospital for urgent stabilisation, after which she was moved to ICU.

The motorcyclist reportedly sustained moderate injuries. According to the motorcyclist, Arno Strydom, he broke his wrist, sustained a head injury, scratched his arms and legs and developed a blood clot in his right leg in the incident.

Arno is unable to return to work because of his injuries. He said he needs surgery on his wrist because the bones are out of place. He said he would be operated on today. He also said he cannot remember much of the incident because he hit his head on the tar. “I remember a face here and there and then the inside of the ambulance,” he said. “My helmet is scratched so I must have hit my head extremely hard.”

The motorcycle is a write-off. “It was my only means of transport to and from work,” said Arno. “I believe it is going to be very difficult to drive a car because my left wrist is broken and I might struggle to change gears.”
