Distracted driving a concern

The AA urges drivers to obey the rules of the road.

The Automobile Association (AA) has released a statement that distracted driving is still a problem on South African roads.

The AA calls for drastic action to be taken or the problem will continue for years to come. They say although action needs to be taken by law enforcement officials, the root of the problem is a driver’s attitude.

The AA held an event in Johannesburg to test a driver’s ability when distracted. It was found that while preoccupied, drivers have a slower reaction time which makes them prone to crash.

The AA found that even while engaged in simple conversation, a driver’s reaction time drops.

They pointed out prevalent activities that distract drivers on the road include:

  • Talking on cellphones
  • Texting
  • Eating
  • Putting on ties or other clothing while driving, or changing clothes while driving
  • Applying make-up while driving
  • Looking to the back seat to engage passengers, especially children
  • Setting GPS devices
  • Searching for items in various areas of the car while driving

The AA urges drivers to obey the lay and to be sensible while on the road.
