BREAKING: Baboon spotted in Randfontein

According to reports, the baboon seems to favour Helikon Park and Culemborg Park.

Rumours are rife that a baboon is on the loose in Randfontein. It seems to favour Helikon Park and Culemborg Park.

Residents from both areas have been reporting sightings over the last few days. The most recent was today (7 July) in Cormorant Street, Helikon Park and later in Van der Stel Road, Culemborg Park.

Stephan du Toit, Transvaal manager of South African Hunters and Game Conservation Association (SAHGCA) said nothing can be done unless the baboon is proven to be a threat. “The baboon is not a threat to the public unless it attacks either a human or a dog,” he said.

Officials of the wildlife association have not been deployed to the area as the exact whereabouts of the baboon have not been established yet.

Du Toit is currently monitoring the situation through tip-offs and is trying to pinpoint where the baboon stays at night. “We cannot drug the baboon unless we can get within five metres of him,” he said.

Du Toit urged community members not to confront the baboon as it is a very dangerous animal.

What to do when confronted by the baboon:

• Don’t smile. Showing your teeth is perceived as a threat.

• Don’t look the baboon straight in the eyes.

• Don’t feed the baboon.

• Don’t approach the baboon.

Report encounters with the baboon to Stephan du Toit on 083 306 3441.
