Helikon Park home targeted by robbers: Domestic worker, 65, tied up

Police: They demanded a firearm, jewellery and cash.

A 65-year-old domestic worker was tied up and her employers’ house on Cormorant Street, Helikon Park was robbed by two men on Tuesday (21 June) at about 10am.

According to Roger Mettam, 58, the homeowner, his domestic worker was attending to the house as usual when she heard a loud noise in one of the rooms. Mettam said she assumed it was the family cat, but was surprised to find two men searching through the house.

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson said police are investigating a case of house robbery.

“It is alleged the two unknown men came to the residence and forced entry into the house. They demanded a firearm, jewellery and cash.

She was allegedly unable to give them any information and they subsequently tied her up and gagged her. The suspects then started ransacking the house.”

Mettam said, “She told them she had only started working at the residence a few weeks before and the owners didn’t disclose such information to her.”

“The suspects took property such as a computer, camera, microwave and jewellery, and fled the scene. The victim did not sustain any serious injuries during the robbery,” Ernst also confirmed.

Mettam said the domestic worker then waited until she no longer heard noises in the house before untying herself. She ran to the house of a CPF member nearby and contacted the police. CPF members arrived within minutes, he said, and the police deployed officers soon thereafter.

I encourage community members to make use of the CPF’s services during situations like these,” Mettam said.

“I am just so thankful that the CPF and police arrived on the scene quickly. They made sure the robbers had left before we went back into the house.”

A neighbours’ security camera shows a vehicle driving slowly past the house several times that morning before the house was robbed. No arrests have been made yet.
