Informal settlers to face eviction

Waterworks Informal Settlement faces eviction of foreigners

The Waterworks informal settlement residents in Westonaria are faced with eviction.

According to Jacques Julius, Constituency Head for Westonaria and Toekomsrus, residents of the informal settlement located on the N12 and Impala road intersection are to be evicted within two weeks after the High Court of South Africa recently granted an eviction order to the land owners.

Throughout this informal settlement certain house numbers are marked red and others blue. According to the residents the red marked houses belong to foreign nationals and those marked blue belong to South African citizens.

“The foreign nationals were informed by the owners and the municipality that they will be the first to be evicted,” Julius said.

Julius explained further, “The challenges residents face include not having alternative accommodation as well as the disruption of their livelihood as they currently reside close to work and school.”

He is concerned about xenophobic attacks as foreigners will be easy targets because they will have no place to hide. Julius also made mention of the fact that winter is here and residents will have no place to go.

Julius encourages the Westonaria Local Municipality, Gauteng Local Government and Human Settlements Department to ensure Waterworks residents have safe alternative accommodation.
