Motivational speaker: Drugs killing our youth

'Our youth can't fly away from their problems such as substance abuse and a difficult family background, like a bird flies away to a warmer place during winter.'

“Drug abuse is a challenge in our communities and it’s killing our youth,” was one of the many messages sent out to youngsters during a Youth Day event near Randfontein on 16 June.

One of the motivational speakers addressing the Rietvalley and Azaadville community in Ward 3 was Clement Matsitse, a community pastor who often does work in Randfontein. He discussed the topic Win in Winter.

“Unfortunately,” he said, “our youth can’t fly away from their problems such as substance abuse and a difficult family background, like a bird flies away to a warmer place during winter, nor can they avoid challenging subjects such as mathematics and science.

If their problems cannot be sorted out, their futures will be negatively affected.”

Other guest speakers who gave hope and motivation to the audience were Sumayah Bera with her Change your attitude topic, and Shadrack Kganyete, who spoke on the subject Education is the key. Ismail Nana and Thapelo Morena (a Bloemfontein Celtic soccer player) also addressed the crowd. Thapelo explained that you can achieve greatness even if you come from a tough background. Shabeer Dhabelia and future candidate councillor also supported the event.

Sumayah, who is a member of the Azaadville community, said it was interesting to note that this was the first ever Youth Day event in the area.

“Preparation for this event started about three weeks ago,” she said. “The day’s program included memories of the sacrifices made by the youth. The Commemoration started with a minute of silence and prayers for all those whose lives were sacrificed for the freedom we enjoy today … The Sarifina Show brought us a realistic recollection of the events of 16 June, 1976.

“Volunteers from all parts of this ward also came together to experience the 40-year commemoration of Youth Day.

“Talented local dancers and singers were encouraged to perform on-stage, and the Mathepelo Girls and Mbazo youth cast thrilled the crowd with their performances. Food was prepared and sponsored by the residents. Sound was provided by Shadrack Kganyete, a local community member, and the hall was set-up and decorated by volunteers.”
